Swason Dennis was born about 1837 and resided in Machias at the time of his enlistment. This location suggests he may have been Passamaquoddy. His given name would more properly be Joachim, which is generally pronounced Swasson by Wabanaki People.
He was wounded and temporarily listed as missing in action at the Battle of the Wilderness in VA on the 3rd day that his regiment was engaged here. He may have been involved in the Battles of Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Ft. Sevens among other engagements in 1864. He was with the 7th Maine when they were transferred to the 1st Maine Veterans Infantry Regiment.
Swason was discharged from the 1st Maine because of disability received in the line of duty.
