Charles Skeetup
13th Maine Infantry - Company E
&
Justus Skeetup
2nd Maine Cavalry - Company F

Updated Nov-2009

Charles Skeetup was born about 1844, probably at Wilton. He was the oldest known son of Justus Skeetup & Charity Hardy.

Charles enlisted at Wilton on 10-Dec-1861, to serve as a private in Co. E, 13th Maine Infantry. He died 2-Feb-1862 at Augusta, Maine, less than 3 months after he enlisted and before his regiment left the state of Maine. We can only guess his cause of death as disease or injuries received in an accident.

  • Enlistment: 10-Dec-1861 to 2-Feb-1862

Justus Skeetup was born 6-Nov-1821 in Washington Plantation ME. He was the son of Mathias Sheetup and Polly Danforth, Indians from Martha's Vineyard. Justus married Charity Hardy (b. 1826 Wilton) and had seven known children born in the 1840s and 50s while living in Wilton. Justus was a teamster on the 1850 census and a farm laborer in the 1860 census at Wilton ME.

Justus enlisted at the age of 43 at Wilton. He served in Company F of the 2nd Maine Cavalry and his regiment served in Alabama, Florida and nearby southern states. The regimental history shows a large number of men lost to disease and only a hand full killed in action by Rebel forces.

His wife appears to have died before or during his service. A guardian for his minor children named "J. Adams" filed for and received a pension for them. The date of filing for the pension is shown as 21-Jan-1865, which is before his recorded death. Either the pension file is incorrect or his date of death in incorrect.

  • Enlistment: 11-Dec-1863 to 30-Jul-1865
