Notes

It is believed this Wabanaki family name may have originated with a French man named St. Aubin who married a Native woman. He or perhaps the next generation (probable given name Thomas) chose to live among the Native People and family members continue to intermarry with local Native populations. It is possible the name has Acadian origins and the original Native woman could have been Mi'kmaq'. By the mid 1800s, the name is clearly associated with the Maliseet Viger community.

The family names St. Aubin and Thomas appear to be interchangable in early records.
