Spouses ?
It appears Edward had at least 3 wives. We have not found a name for the first 2 wives as of Dec-2010. We have no evidence this Edward Marden was married to a woman named Sarah Elmers (1758-1833), except in trees found online that do not supply a source for the information.
- 1st wife - in the 1800 Census, Edward was with a woman aged 26 to 45 and in the 1810 Census, Edward was living with a woman that was 45 years of age or older (so b.bet.1755 & 1765). It is not unreasonable to speculate this is the same woman in both census, she was his wife, and most likely the mother of his son (who was "of age" in 1820, so b.bef.1799).
- 2nd wife - Edward's pension record tells us he had a 40 year old wife in 1820 (b.abt.1780). This is clearly a much younger woman than the one with him in the 1810 census. She may be the Sarah Elmers that others claim he was married to. One descendant claims a local deed search turned up a given name of Charlotte, but we have not yet seen the documentation.
- 3rd wife - Edward's pension record tells us he was married to Chloe Barnes in 1831 and she was his widow when he died in 1835. Barnes may not be her maiden name, as she may have had a prior marriage or marriages.

Heritage?
At this time her identity and heritage are undocumented and only educated speculation. We have found no historical documentation concerning the mother of Edward's son. We have determined Edward Jr. was born about 1785, which suggests the woman with Edward five years later in the 1790 Census was most likely the mother of Edward Jr.. She was born between 1755 and 1765. The mother of his son is clearly not the younger woman born about 1780 mentioned by Edward in his 1820 pension statement. This first wife most likely died between 1810 and 1820. Based on family oral history concerning a Native American wife for Edward, we suggest it should be his first wife and the mother of Edward Jr.. At least one of Edward Junior's sons has decidedly Native features and more than one line of descent maintains they do have Native heritage. This idea of a Native wife is supported by the fact that Edward was a Ranger and would have had many opportunities to befriend or be befriended by Native Americans (most likely Abenaki, but other tribes are also possible) during his war service (1777-1783). | Native American ? Connections?
The 1790 and 1800 census suggest that Edward Marden may have had a daughter. There are 2 females in the household in 1790 and 1 female age 10-16 in the 1800 household. In 1800, Edward also had another male in his age bracket in the household, so this female could be the other man's child. Also, either or both census females might be servants, neices, or in-laws, etc.. Note that Edward makes no mention of a daughter in his pension records, so if she existed, she may have died before 1820. | daughter Marden

This record shows 2 adult men in the 26-45 age bracket, 2 males age 10-16, 1 female age 10-16, and one female age 26-45. We know one of the young males would be Edward's son and the young female could be an unknown daughter. The older woman should be his wife. But who is the second young male and the second older male - a brother and nephew, in-laws, hired men working for him, or just neighbors needing a temporary place to stay??? | Edward Marden

This town is very near to the town were he enlisted and lacal history mentions an Edward Mardin as a early settler who arrived about 1770. However, other information in the town history provides contradictory information suggesting it was a different Edward Marden or perhaps the history has mixed up some information with a different early settler family. | Edward Marden

Birth?
In the 1790 Census of Concord, NH, Edward Mardin (the Rev. Soldier) is shown with one other male in the household and that male is under the age of 16. Therefore this son was born between 1775 and 1790. In the 1800 Census, Edward's (the Rev. Soldier) son is 10-16 years of age so born between 1784 and 1790. In the 1810 Census, Edward Jr. is between the age of 16 and 25, therefore born between 1785 and 1794. In 1820, Edward (the Rev. Soldier) stated in his pension record that he had a son "of age" (21 or older), therefore born before 1799. In the 1830 Census, Edward (Jr.) of Albany VT is age 40-50. In the 1840 Census, Edward of Albany VT is between the age of 50 and 60. In the 1870 Census, Edward of Albany VT lists his age as 85, therefore born about 1785. Based on census ages, We believe Edward was born about 1785.
The birth year of 1779 suggested by Edward's grandson, Riley Hull Marden (age about 50 at the time), must be an error on his part or perhaps a transcription error during the publishing of the David Annis genealogy.
In support of the 1785 birth it should be remembered that Edward Sr. was a Revolutionary War Ranger serving in the Northern Theater from 1776-1783. It certainly is not impossible, but it does seem unlikely he would start a family before his discharge from active duty. | Edward Jr Marden
|
| 32 |
Connections?
We currently have no proof the Edward Jr found listed in the 1810 Lyman census is the son of Edward (RW soldier). However, we do know the elder Edward is the same person that served in the Rev. War and he did have a son with his own family before 1820. Since no other Mardens are found in Lyman or nearby in this time period, it is reasonable to speculate the two are father and son. A descendant claims a local deed search does established this relationship in a deed between Edward Mardin Sr and Edward Mardin Jr dated in 1820. We have not yet seen this documentation. | Edward Jr Marden

Heritage?
Oral family history suggests the wife or mother of this Edward Marden was an Indian woman. His wife, Elizabeth Annis, is well documented in the "Genealogy of David Annis ..." and we found nothing to suggest they were Native. Therefore, we believe it was Edward's mother that was an Indian. The oral history of Native ancestry is found in more than one line of descent from this man. | Edward Jr Marden
|
| 34 |
Spouses?
We are certain Elizabeth Annis was the wife of this Edward (Marden correspondence in the published David Annis Genealogy). There is also a marriage record for a Edward Marden & Lydia Edson in Vermont. We do find Edward and Lydia in Albany VT in the 1860 Census. At least one genealogy manuscript claims he also had 2 sons by a Rebecca Jameson. This is as yet unproven.

We have reason to believe Nathaniel was married to Abigail Beedy in 1828 and she was the mother of his children (b.1829-1856).
In 1850 we find Nathaniel in Franklin Co., ME with a wife named Sally. She is the same age as Abigail Beedy. Sally is an unusual nickname for Abigail. Is this women Abigail or a 2nd wife? If another wife, than the 3 month old child, Chapin, should be hers.
In 1860 we find Nathaniel in Errol, NH with a wife named Sally, (6 years younger than the previous Sally), several children with the surname McGile (or McGill b. 1842-1852), and 2 Marden children. The Marden children help to confirm this is the same Nathaniel found in Maine the previous census.
We have not been able to locate any additional information concerning the McGile children.
The History of Megalloway gives the identity of the 1860 wife as Sally Jones Linnell. A death date of 4-Mar-1867 at Errol, NH is usually assoiated with Abigail. However, the Linnell history shows this same date and place of death for Sally Linnell.
Was it Sally Linnell with Nathaniel in the 1850 census with an incorret age or was it Abigail with an unusual nickname? | Nathaniel Marden
