Emery/LeCroix - Family Artifact

A Family Treasure!

This is the cuff from a pair of moccasins worn by a descendant of
Peter & Eliza (Cross) Emery.
The cuff is approximately 7 inched long and 1.5 inches wide.

Moccasin Cuff

The family tradition concerning this treasure;
Peter Emery (jr.), is said to have refused to wear anything but Indian moccasins on his feet. This beaded ankle cuff is one from a pair of moccasins which Peter gave to his grandson Robert (abt 1930). Robert wore the moccasins until he wore them out, but saved the cuffs because of the beautiful beadwork. Robert says he was about 10 years old when his grandfather gave him the moccasins. His recollection is that the moccasins were something his grandfather had for a while, and that they came from "his people."

Our FRIENDS have this to add;
"Many of the beads are missing, and the fabric to which they were sewn has many little holes. The beadwork is not quite intact, as the ends appear cut off. And the photo doesn't do the work justice -- the colors aren't true (there are green beads in the shapes at the ends, but their color doesn't show); it is much more impressive looking at the real McCoy."

The Ancestor Couple;
Eliza Cross was b. abt. 1-Apr-1832 somewhere in Canada. She was known as "Lizzie" and also recorded as "Liseme Lacroix". She was a "St. Francis Indian" according to oral family tradition.

Peter Emery was b. abt. 23-Jun-1828 at Montreal or Trois Rivieres. He served in the Civil War in Company B of the 9th Vermont Volunteers and became a U.S. Citizen based on his military service. His military papers describe him as dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

Eliza and Peter married about 1852 in Highgate, VT by a justice of the peace, and settled at Lebanon NH, moving to Cornish NH later in ife.

Permission to use this picture was given by Sara Addario and Irene Welch - descendants researching this couple. They would be pleased to hear from anyone that has any information concerning Eliza & Peter, other living descendants, or infomation that might identify the beadwork pattern on this cuff.
