Laudiby (aka Vassal)
Last updated 10-Jul-00
- Possible Family Origin: Unknown [Day 1981], the Vassal descendants [NL 2000]
- Other Possibly Spellings: Leaudibi, Leaudeby
- Other Notes: Catherine Laudiby is listed as a widow in census 1844-52. Stanislas b. abt 1785 appears 1844-52. William b. abt 1825 appears 1844-52. Francois appears in 1850-52. This is the only time period the name appears in records. This one stumped Gordon Day, but the big clue is in the 1845 census when Catherine is given as Catherine Lazar Laudiby. The absence of the Vassal surname in census of this period, the names of the two younger men being the same as the children of Stanislas Vassal, Catherine's identity as widow, the family makeup in these census years, and the approx. birth dates of the Laudiby's in records - all point to this being an alternate surname used by Catherine and Stanislas Vassal/Lazare.

Lazalis and Lazare
Last updated 10-Jul-00
- Possible Family Origin: Unknown [Day 1981]
- Other Possibly Spellings: Lazar (French), Eleazar/Elijah (English)
- Western Abenaki pronunciation: Lazal
- Other Places Where Family Name Appears: Durham PQ Canada
- Other Notes: Lazelle served in Jacob Bayley's American company during the Revolution.
Lazalis is 'little Lazal'. Both Lazalis and Lazare existed as family names at Odanak. Neither appear to be true surnames as the descendants use many different family names.
Lazare 2nd of the 1805 Durham Land Grant is Francois Lazare aka Lazare Thomas. He is probably of the Wanlinas family. He m. Marie Angelique Obomsawine. He d. Jul-1810. When his wife d. in 1853 she is called the widow of Lazare Wolinasse. His known children are; Suzanne Lazalis/Thomas/Obomsawin, Cecile Catherine Lazalis/Thomas, probably Jean Baptiste, Marie Louise Lazalis/Thomas, and Anastasie Lazare/Lazalis/Obomsawine. Anastasie is recorded as heir to the Durham lands of Pierre Joseph Wanlinas. Something for which we can find no reason except the possibly connection through her father. Much more research is need for this family.
Lazare 1st m. Marguerite Annance. Marguerite also had children by Francois Vassal. We have no reliable dates at this time. We are not sure just how this all comes together, but here are the pieces we have so far.
Francois Vassal was a soldier stationed at Odanak. He did not marry Marguerite. Catherine Vassal b.abt.1782 is a child of Marguerite by Francois according to family testimony in 1869. Stanilas b. bet. 1781 and 1785 is most likely Catherine's full brother. Francois Vassalle, an adult at Three Rivers in 1841 may also be a full or half brother. Marie Cecile Lazare b.? is probably the child of Marguerite by Lazare. Francois Joseph, & Robert may be other children of Lazare & Marguerite.
