Merrimack River People

  • Kancamagus (aka John Hawkins), was a Pennecook sachem (leader) from the Merrimack River, grandson of Passaconaway. He moved his family to the Androscoggin about 1685, to be better protected from Mohawk raiding parties.

The nearest way to the New Hampshire villages was by the St. Francis [River], through passes of the White Mountains to Lake Winnipesaukee (which is but thirty miles from Dover) and thence by the Merrimac to the settlements on or near that river.
